The Buffalo Water Board is asking its customers for help in identifying whether a lead pipe is carrying water into their homes.
More than a hundred miles of underground lead pipes that carry water into Buffalo homes will have to be dug up and replaced by 2037 under new federal guidelines proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA is pushing to have all lead service lines removed and replaced – which could cost Buffalo about $400 million dollars – and public water providers are required to prepare inventories identifying the lead service lines in their territory.
Customers can check by finding where the service line enters the home in a basement or crawlspace and scratching the line gently with a coin. If the scratch reveals a shiny metallic material, the pipe is likely lead.
Buffalo Water customers can learn more at https://getwaterwisebuffalo.org, where they will be asked to complete a survey.
