A justice from Cayuga County has been removed from office, according to a state commission overseeing local justices.
The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct said in a news release that Montezuma Town Justice William H. Futrell should be removed from office after he posted inappropriate things to Facebook. The decision, made public after meeting statutory notice requirements, comes following serious misconduct charges against Futrell.
The Commission found that he posted Nazi imagery on his Facebook page and expressed approval of pages that denigrated and objectified women. The Commission’s Administrator Robert H. Tembeckjian emphasized the inappropriateness of such behavior, particularly for a judge.
Futrell, who is not an attorney, has served as a Justice since 2020, with his term set to expire on December 31, 2023. However, he failed to respond to the Commission’s proceedings after being served with a Formal Written Complaint.
