A 78-year-old Buffalo man being held in the custody of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office on second-degree murder charges died after reportedly suffering a medical event while at Erie County Court.
Donald McCoy, who is accused of the 2020 fatal stabbing of Adele Oliver, 55, in the Amherst Street home they shared, was slated to undergo a competency exam at the courthouse when he collapsed and became unresponsive, according to Sheriff John C. Garcia.
During his three years in custody, McCoy had been hospitalized several times, including being admitted to Buffalo General Hospital last month, Garcia said in a news release. McCoy was transferred to ECMC for treatment of an infection in his brain but was cleared by medical staff to be transported to Erie County Court on Thursday, he added.
Sheriff’s deputies and court officers administered CPR until they were relieved by Buffalo Firefighters, Garcia said. He added authorities are awaiting autopsy reports to determine a cause of death.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has notified the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the New York State Commission of Correction about the death.
