MONTICELLO – A developer wants to purchase the former Sullivan County Jail property behind the county courthouse on Bushnell Avenue in the Village of Monticello.
Mendel Stern would pay the county $100,000 for the old facility, knock it down and build new housing.
Legislators declined to approve the deal at Thursday’s monthly session because they wanted a deadline by which Stern would demolish the current structures and create the housing. But County Attorney Michael McGuire said the purchase price offer expires at the end of this month and could not give a definitive timeline as to when the buildings would be razed and housing built.
At the conclusion of debate, lawmakers voted to table the sale to Stern, effectively killing his offer.
