A dry Northeast makes a fine Christmas gift, but as Christmas Day comes to a close the wet weather will begin again.
Thanks to an area of high pressure occupying the Northeast through Sunday night, Christmas will steer clear from snarling weather, according to AccuWeather. However, following Santaโs seemingly clear sleigh ride and a day full of Christmas cheer, an incoming storm is expected to bring rainfall to the region.
โThe same storm expected to deliver snow in the center of the country before Christmas is expected to move through the Ohio Valley and Northeast following Christmas Day,โ AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.
While Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia can expect to see raindrops Monday afternoon, New York can expect rain to sweep into the area by midday Tuesday, as noted by AccuWeather.
This lingering precipitation is anticipated to characterize much of the Northeast for most of the week with widespread rainfall amounts of half-an-inch forecast from the Ohio River Valley to the Eastern Seaboard; some spots between Virginia and Massachusetts could potentially receive a few inches.
Additional rainfall will increase the total tally of precipitation thus far in NYC. Within the first 20 days of December, NYC has received more than 5 inches of rain, about one and a half times the historical average, AccuWeather reports.
โBecause of the recent rains, some locations may be more susceptible to flooding,โ Roys said.
Unfortunately, those wishing for some snow to round out the year will be disappointed to hear that AccuWeatherโs forecast calls for warm air to accompany the rain. However, colder air coming down into the Great Lakes and Plains late next week may allow for some snow to fall within the interior Northeast.
The early New Yearโs Eve 2023 forecast indicates a dry, typical December evening for NYC as the ball falls in Times Square.
