Congressman Brandon Williams was subjected to a “swatting” incident at his home in Sennett on Christmas Day, according to Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. The term “swatting” refers to the act of falsely reporting an emergency, typically a violent crime, to prompt a heavy law enforcement response to a specific location.
The incident occurred at 2 p.m. when members of the sheriff’s office, along with the New York State Police, responded to a reported shooting at Williams’ residence. This emergency call was made to the Cayuga County E-911 Center.
Upon arrival, law enforcement quickly ascertained that the report was a hoax. Officials were frustrated by the incident, noting the significant inconvenience and distress it caused Congressman Williams and his family, especially on a major holiday like Christmas.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident and is currently working to identify the individual responsible for making the false report. The act of “swatting” is considered a serious crime due to the potential for harm and the unnecessary allocation of law enforcement resources.
