Wells College has sold the 125-year-old McGordon House at 110 Main Street in the village of Aurora, igniting a contentious debate in the community.
The Citizen reports the property, acquired for $425,000 by Kevin Fitzgerald, co-manager of the college’s golf course, through Aurora Route 90 Group LLC, includes a significant lakeside land parcel.
Fitzgerald plans to demolish the historic house in the spring to construct two long-term rental homes.
A public meeting to discuss these zoning changes is scheduled for January 24 at the Morgan Opera House, with a village board vote expected thereafter.
The decision to dismantle the McGordon House, built in 1898, has faced opposition from some Aurora residents who view the building as historically significant and salvageable. County records indicated the property, despite being contested by all parties involved, was worth over $7 million.
