STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City is getting crowded with certain baby names, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently announced.
Of the nearly 51,000 boys and over 48,000 girls born in 2022, Liam and Emma led the way for their respective genders, with Noah and Mia coming in second for boys and girls, according to data.
On Monday, the Health Department, led by Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, announced the top baby names for the previous year.
Olivia, Sophia, Leah, Ava, Esther, Isabella, Luna and Amelia rounded out the top 10 names for the 48,864 New York City girls born in 2022. Ethan, Lucas, David, Jacob, Aiden, Joseph, Daniel and Alexander rounded out the top 10 names for the 50,595 boys born that year in the five boroughs.
“What makes our city special are the New Yorkers – big and small – who call the five boroughs home,” Vasan said. “So welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah and all the other newborns to New York. Our city and world are better for your presence in the new year and beyond.”
Liam has been the top boy baby name since 2016, and Emma has led the way for girls since 2017, according to the Health Department.
While Noah has been the second top boys’ name since at least 2018 time, 2022 was the first year that Mia pulled into that spot, according to the Health Department.
Nine names remained on the 2022 list compared to the 2021 list. Esther came into the seventh spot for girls’ names, pushing Sofia off the top 10, but the Health Department noted that if Sofia and Sophia were counted the same, they would take the top name for girls.
Like the girls, only one boy name, Alexander, entered the top 10 compared to 2021 — pushing Benjamin from the annual list.
Across the city in 2022, 39,320 babies were born in Manhattan, 11,048 were born in the Bronx, 23,318 were born in Brooklyn, 20,109 were born in Queens, and 5,664 were born on Staten Island giving the Island the second highest birth rate to Manhattan when compared to 2020 U.S. Census…
