Acclaimed New Paltz pub closing its doors on NYE

NEW PALTZ – A Main Street bar modeled after pubs common in Germany is closing its doors after eight years of providing its following with food and specialty beers.  Schatzi’s Pub and Bier Garden in New Paltz is ending 2023 by closing its doors permanently.  Schatzi’s at 202 Main Street in Poughkeepsie will remain open.

“Our customers have been nothing short of fabulous here in New Paltz,” said owner Jeremy Phillips.  “While these doors are closing, I want everyone to understand that Schatzi’s on Main Street in Poughkeepsie will continue to provide the same great food and libations that we’ve had at both locations since day one,” he said. “I want to be very clear that the Poughkeepsie location will be open and will welcome our customers from the west side of the Hudson to Schatzi’s in Poughkeepsie with the same enthusiasm, great food, and large beverage selection,” he told Mid-Hudson News at a meeting in New Paltz on Wednesday night.

Citing the manpower shortage that has hit the service/hospitality industry especially hard, the pub owner has had difficulty getting servers and other staff to fill the vacancies that began at the end of the pandemic.  “The staff we do have are great and they have been working extra hard to make up for the lack of coworkers,” said Phillips.  It has been so difficult that I have posted about the staffing shortage on our website,” the bar owner said.  The post he referenced says “Thank you for your patience. We are not at full strength with staff and service and our food may take a little longer, but we are all working hard to provide you with the best possible experience!”
