POUGHKEEPSIE – A domestic dispute early Sunday morning resulted in two police officers getting injured and a suspect being arrested on several charges. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 am on Sunday, December 31, on North Bridge Street in the City of Poughkeepsie.
City cops responded to a reported domestic disturbance at approximately 4:57 am. When police arrived, they located 43-year-old Shanteek Gaines and attempted to take him into custody. Gaines refused to comply and violently struggled with the officers, including biting and punching them. The officers involved in the struggle radioed for additional units who responded within minutes and helped subdue Gaines and take him into custody.
One officer who was bitten by Gaines was treated at the hospital and a tetanus shot was administered. Another officer is believed to have suffered a broken hand in the struggle and was also treated at a local hospital.
Gaines was charged with felony assault and the misdemeanors of harassment, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal obstruction of breathing, and resisting arrest.
He was processed at police headquarters and held pending arraignment.
