POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi and City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers are both holding their ceremonial swearing-in ceremonies today, Tuesday, January 2.
Parisi is the first Democrat to hold the county’s top law enforcement position since FDR’s ally John Mack held the position from 1907-1912. Flowers is the first African-American mayor in the history of the City of Poughkeepsie and only the fourth woman to lead the city’s government.
The ceremonial inauguration for Mayor Flowers is taking place at Poughkeepsie High School, from where she graduated. The 1 p.m. gathering is open to the public and is free of charge. The event will also feature the swearing-in of the new common council as a show of unity between the two branches of government, according to Flowers.
Flowers served four terms on the council before being elected mayor in November.
District Attorney Parisi’s swearing-in ceremony, featuring Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati as the master of ceremony, is taking place at 2:30 p.m. today at the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center on Vassar Street. Judge David Steinberg will administer the oath of office to the county’s first new district attorney in 40 years.
Due to limited seating at the Cunneen-Hackett theater, the event is not open to the public.
