STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Chevy SUV tore through the center median and flipped over onto its roof in a terrifying crash early Tuesday morning in Bulls Head.
The incident occurred on a commercial stretch of Richmond Avenue near Victory Boulevard just after 2 a.m., according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
Multiple trees could be seen knocked down and a large sprinkling of debris from the overturned vehicle could be seen scattered throughout the street. A wheel was seen lying on the sidewalk.
It’s unknown what precipitated the crash, but Kara Gallo, of New Springville, told the Advance/SILive.com that her boyfriend saw two cars traveling at a high rate of speed as they passed him near Richmond Avenue and Nome Avenue.
By the time he caught up with them, the Chevy was flipped over, and one of its two female passengers was lying in the street, she recalled him saying. Gallo quickly called 911 and met her boyfriend at the scene, she said.
“The second car was nowhere to be found,” Gallo said. “The younger girl was loaded into an ambulance and the passenger was clearly in shock, walking with no shoes on. (EMS) put a neck brace on her and loaded her into an ambulance too.”
Both women were transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in unknown condition.
Gallo added that both women were covered in gasoline and other automobile fluids, and that their clothes had to be cut off and discarded from the ambulance.
The cause of the crash is unknown and an investigation is ongoing, police said.
