First female judge takes the bench in the Town of Fishkill

FISHKILL- For the first time in the town’s 235-year history, a woman has been sworn in as justice in the Town of Fishkill.

Theoni Salotto, a first-generation American whose family immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1969, won her election to serve as town justice in November.  Salotto was sworn in alongside other town officials on Monday at the town hall.

Salotto lives in Fishkill with her husband Chris and three children.  She moved to Fishkill more than 22 years ago and immediately became involved in the community.

“I have always been engaged in community activities,” Salotto said.  “I have been a Girl Scout leader and have volunteered with the PTA.”  Balancing her work as a private practice attorney, her responsibilities as a mother, and finding time to volunteer in the community wasn’t always easy, but was important, she said.

When asked about serving as the first female justice in town history, Salotto said she didn’t even realize it was the case when she began her campaign.  It was only after several months that she realized it was possible she could be the first.

Salotto, an attorney, said she was attracted to the profession at a young age.  She said her interest in law began when her sister began working as a court reporter and even as a young child, wanted to become an attorney and judge.

When asked about how she plans to approach her new role, Salotto said she hopes to bring compassion to the bench.  “I think the key is being able to see both sides of an issue,” she said.
