2 men found with guns, drugs during search of Westcott neighborhood home, troopers say

Syracuse, N.Y. — Two men have been charged with possessing illegal guns, cocaine and cannabis after attempting to flee police in the Westcott neighborhood, troopers said.

Troopers were executing a search warrant in a drug investigation at a home at 241 Roosevelt Ave. shortly before 11 a.m. Friday when one of the men tried to flee in a vehicle, according to Trooper Jack Keller, a spokesperson for the State Police.

In the search, officers collected three semi-automatic handguns, troopers said in a felony complaint filed in Syracuse City Court.

Drugs were also seized including 56 grams (2 ounces) of cocaine, 4.5 pounds of cannabis, a plastic bag of mushrooms and a digital scale covered in white powder , according to the felony complaint.

The two men arrested were Celese I. Grey, 23, of Syracuse, and Nicholas P. MacNaughton, 23, of Syracuse.

They both face multiple charges of criminal possession of a controlled substances and possession of a weapon, Keller said.

During the search Grey escaped from the back of the home, ignored troopers and fled in a stolen Chevy Tahoe, Keller said. Grey drove the car through several backyards and hit two vehicles on Roosevelt Avenue, one being an unmarked State Police Tahoe, he said.

Officers, some in camouflage, swarmed the area. An armored SWAT truck and at least one police dog were brought in. The street was closed for several hours.

Grey was taken into custody and sent to Upstate University Hospital, after complaining of foot and leg pain, Keller said.

Both Grey and MacNaughton are facing charges of:

  • Two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony
  • Three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony
  • Two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony
  • Three counts of criminal possession of a firearm, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (Ghost Gun), a misdemeanor
  • Third-degree criminal possession of cannabis, a misdemeanor
