The Fulton girls basketball team won their fourth straight game, beating Mexico 54-27 on Monday night.
The Red Dragons started the season 1-3.
โItโs just a flip of the switch,โ Fulton coach Craig Trude said. โWe lost a couple of girls at the beginning of the year, but we are starting to figure it out.โ
Trude is in his first season as the coach of Fulton.
Laura Bartlett finished with a career-high 27 points for the Red Dragons. Her previous career-high of 13 points came in her most recent game on Dec. 22 at Oswego.
โWe donโt beg girls to play. We want girls to beg to play,โ Trude said. โThese girls bought into that when I told them that. Itโs the next girl up. Laura didnโt start at the beginning of the season. She didnโt play that much. Now sheโs scoring 27 points in a big win over a really good Mexico team.โ
Trude has only eight girls on the roster. Six of them are seniors.
โThese seniors are all I have right now,โ Prude said. โThree girls quit. I have one sophomore who is out for the season with an injury. Seniors are going to have to lead the way. They did it against Auburn.โ
Earlier in the season, the Red Dragons defeated Auburn, a team they had lost to 20 straight times.
It was a strong defensive effort from Fulton to get past Mexico.
โWe played hard on them. A good team scored 27 points on us tonight, 16 coming from the free-throw line,โ Prude said. โThey earned their points tonight. This is the best defensive performance of the season for us, and that is a well-coached Mexico team. (Dominick Anthony) has turned that program around.โ
Mexico (6-3) is on the road against Homer at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Fulton (5-3) plays Jamesville-DeWitt on Tuesday. The Red Dragons have lost the last four games against J-D by a combined 10 points.
โWe want to beat them. Thatโs a league opponent,โ Trude said. โWe can still win our league where nobody thought we would do anything.โ
