Dramatic photo shows burned-out electric vehicle at Staten Island sanitation garage

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Electric vehicles belonging to the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) were damaged during a fire at a Staten Island sanitation garage.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Dec. 14, at around 11:15 p.m. in the parking lot outside the S102 garage, located at 2500 Richmond Ave. in New Springville, a DSNY spokesman told the Advance/SILive.com.

The fire impacted one charging port, which belongs to and is maintained by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, and two Mitsubishi Outlanders owned by DSNY, the spokesman said.

Burn damage, charring

In a photo obtained by the Advance/SILive.com, one of the vehicles can be seen with burn damage to nearly its entire rear end, while almost all the windows are blown out with substantial charring visible on the inside. The charging port appears burnt out and destroyed as well.

“Both vehicles were parked and empty, and we are very happy to report that there were no injuries, although the vehicles and charging port were significantly damaged,” the spokesman said.

Sixty firefighters and 12 units responded to the fire, which was placed under control by 11:40 p.m. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, an FDNY spokesperson said.
