Trial starts for accused Upstate NY killer in Kaylin Gillis shooting

Fort Edward, N.Y. — The trial for the man accused of killing a woman after shooting at a car that took a wrong turn into his driveway in Upstate New York has begun.

Jury selection is underway in the murder trial of Kevin Monahan in Washington County Court. Monahan has been charged with fatally shooting Kaylin Gillis last spring after her boyfriend mistakenly turned into the 65-year-old man’s driveway.

The trial is expected to take two to three weeks, Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan told USA Today.

During the trial, a judge has ruled prosecutors can’t use words like “victim, assailant and perpetrator” and attendees cannot wear clothes or carry signs showing support for Gillis, Spectrum News 1 reported.

The deadly shooting happened on April 15 in Hebron, a rural town close to the Vermont border and about 50 miles north of Albany.

Gillis and a group of friends got lost while searching for another friend’s house and accidentally turned into Monahan’s driveway, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy previously said. The group — driving in a small caravan made up of two cars and a motorcycle — were pulling out of the driveway when the homeowner opened fire, the sheriff said.

Monahan fired two shots at the group, the sheriff said. One shot hit and fatally wounded Gillis.

Gillis’ boyfriend told NBC he sped away, frantically trying to find a place with cellphone service so they could call 911. When first responders found the group, Gillis had died. She was 20 years old.

No one from Gillis’ group of friends exited their vehicles when they accidentally turned into Monahan’s driveway, Sheriff Murphy said. But a neighbor told the Associated Press that Monahan bitterly despised when people mistakenly drove onto his property.

Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder and other charges. If found guilty, he could face serving 25 years to life in prison.
