DeWitt, N.Y. — A kosher-style deli that opened shop in November and quickly drew lines of hungry customers that stretched into the parking lot will close for good on Sunday.
Goodman’s Delicatessen opened on Nov. 15 in the DeWitt shopping plaza at 4461 E. Genesee St. Huseyin Turan took over the space that was home to Peachtree Sandwich Co. before it closed after a year because the owner needed a larger space. He and business partner, Viktoriya Kononchuk, had previously owned Touch of Broadway in East Syracuse for three years before opening Goodman’s.
Like the Peachtree Sandwich Co. owner, Turan said that storefront was too small for such crowds. He said he is returning to the building that housed Touch of Broadway, located at 6812 Manlius Center Road, East Syracuse. He had sold the Touch of Broadway business last year, but it closed about six weeks ago.
He will open there on Jan. 22 as Empire Pizza & Deli, named after his first business in New Haven, Connecticut. The new business will focus on New York City-style pizza and chicken wings, but he will continue to serve his popular corned beef and pastrami sandwiches.
“The current spot is just too small,” Turan said this afternoon. “Customers had nowhere to sit, and I missed that. This will be better all the way around.”
Pizza Cutters, a pizzeria located in the former Bob’s Barkers location at 3712 New Court Ave., will take over the Goodman’s Deli spot for a second location, said owner Sal Mere.
Mere and his wife, Stephanie, opened Pizza Cutters seven years ago in Lyncourt but outgrew their original spot. They purchased the New Court Ave. location last year. Mere said he expects to open Pizza Cutters 2 on Feb. 1.
“We’ve been very busy,” said said, referring to winning the National Buffalo Wing King award at Syracuse’s Wing Fest last summer.
