The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch ahead of another weather system that will bring a wintry mix of precipitation to the Finger Lakes region, along with the potential for more damaging winds.
As of Thursday at 7 a.m. the following counties are included in the High Wind Watch: Northern Cayuga, Ontario, Livingston, Wayne, and Monroe.
The โwatchโ which typically precedes a Wind Advisory or High Wind Warning is for Friday Evening through Saturday Night. Specific timelines are issued after the watch status is replaced with an advisory or warning.
The National Weather Service says sustained winds of 30-40 mph are possible with gusts to 65 mph possible. The timing of this event will pose challenges, because many communities across the Finger Lakes are still cleaning up from the most-recent round of damaging winds.
In fact, as of Thursday morning, thousands were still without power. However, many of the counties that were hardest hit by power outages โ like Seneca, Yates, and Central/Southern Cayuga counties โ were not included in the watch.
Lake effect snow warnings and winter weather advisories are also posted for parts of the North Country and Western New York.
