Eagles player wants MetLife Stadium turf changed ASAP: ‘That (bleep) is trash’

PHILADELPHIA – The much-maligned turf at MetLife Stadium has ended the seasons for several players in the past, and the calls to switch to grass have grown louder with each year that passes. Eagles cornerback Darius Slay wants the switch to happen sooner, especially after seeing a teammate suffer a torn ACL in last Sunday’s game against the Giants.

On the latest episode of his “Big Play Slay” podcast, Slay criticized the Giants and Jets, who both play at the stadium, for not changing the playing surface and potentially contributing to safety Sydney Brown’s torn ACL. Brown was covering a punt during the first quarter and fell down after running downfield. Brown hobbled off the field and eventually was carted off. An MRI later confirmed that Brown’s season was done.

“First things first, Giants, please get your turf fixed,” Slay said during the podcast. “You have two owners. You can split it 50-50. You really can split it 50-50. If you really need players to help donate, we’ll help donate. There are tragic injuries there every year. We had some guys go down this past weekend. Of course, you saw A.J. (Brown) go down with his knee, and my boy Syd, a rookie, had been playing well and got his first pic last week, a pick-6 at that, and comes down here, on no contact on the punt team and tore his ACL. I’m sick to my stomach about it because that kid works so hard, and he’s a good kid. To see him go down like that was devastating.”

Slay doubled down on the premise the turf needed to be changed Wednesday, hoping a change is made to make it safer for the players.

“That (bleep) needs to go,” Slay told NJ Advance Media. “They have two owners who can split that cost in half and save some money. I’ll let them do what they need to do on one hand, but that (bleep) is bad. Guys are falling out of nowhere, but I hope they figure that out and get that stuff situated so it is healthier for the guys to play on.”
