Buffalo brothers featured in new Netflix show, Stanford twin study

Buffalo, N.Y. — One of the most popular shows on Netflix right now stars twin brothers from Western New York.

The Buffalo brothers — identical twins John Whittington III and Jevon Whittington — are featured on “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment”, a new show released on New Year’s Day. The limited series follows four sets of twins who participated in a study by Stanford Medicine comparing vegan and omnivore diets.

“You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment” is currently the third most-watched show on Netflix, according to data released by the streaming service, and received a whopping 8,000,000 views in the first week of 2024.

“It feels really good to be representing our hometown, having this moment in this town,” Jevon Whittington told WKBW.

The Stanford study was made up of 22 pairs of identical twins, including the Whittington brothers. With the help of participants’ matching DNA, the study leaders aimed to compare the impact of vegan diets to omnivore diets on cardiovascular health.

From May to July 2022, the twins were each assigned a special diet, Standford Medicine reported: One twin ate all vegan food, while the other ate more traditional — albeit healthy — omnivore fare.

The Netflix show followed the Whittington brothers and three other sets of twins on their journey through the study. (Spoiler alert: Standford said the study determined a vegan diet boosts heart health in just eight weeks.)

“Not only did this study provide a groundbreaking way to assert that a vegan diet is healthier than the conventional omnivore diet, but the twins were also a riot to work with,” said Christopher Gardner, the study’s senior author, in a Standford Medicine story. “They dressed the same, they talked the same and they had a banter between them that you could have only if you spent an inordinate amount of time together.”
