The Giants now have one known defensive coordinator interview in the books, as they move toward replacing Wink Martindale.
Ravens secondary coach Dennard Wilson recently interviewed for the job, according to NFL Network.
Wilson, 41, is a former Jets and Eagles assistant. He has never been a defensive coordinator.
He was the Rams’ defensive backs coach from 2015-16, and then had that same job with the Jets from 2017-18. For the next two seasons, with the Jets, he continued to coach the secondary — but got a promoted title (defensive passing game coordinator).
Wilson joined the Eagles in 2021 as their defensive backs coach. Then he added a passing game coordinator title in 2022. He headed to the Ravens in 2023 to be their defensive backs coach, after Eagles coach Nick Sirianni fired him.
Wilson had been passed over for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator job, after Jonathan Gannon left to become the Cardinals’ head coach. Sirianni wound up hiring Sean Desai, who he then demoted in December, while making Matt Patricia (a senior defensive assistant) the defensive play caller.
In Baltimore, Wilson was just the secondary coach in 2023 and did not have a passing game coordinator title.
Now, he could replace Martindale with the Giants, after Martindale and Daboll just went through an ugly, drawn-out divorce. And if Wilson gets Martindale’s old job, he’ll face Philadelphia — and maybe Martindale, who could wind up there — twice every season.
