Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Sunday defended her team, including Nathan Wade, in her first public comments after scrutiny over an alleged affair with the special prosecutor.

Speaking to the congregation at Atlantaโ€™s Big Bethel A.M.E Church Sunday, Willis said sheโ€™d assembled a diverse team that can accomplish โ€œextraordinary things,โ€ย and questionedย those who โ€œattacked this lawyer of impeccable credentials,โ€ alluding to allegations made by one ofย Donald Trumpโ€™sย co-defendants in the Georgia electionย caseย thatย Willisย improperly hired a romantic partner to help prosecute the case and has financially benefitted fromย Wadeโ€™sย appointment.

Noting Wadeโ€™s credentials, Willis said all three special counselors she appointed are โ€œsuperstarsโ€ butย asked, โ€œIs it that some will never see a Black man as qualified โ€“ no matter his achievements? What more can one achieve?ย The other two have never been judges, but no one questions their credentials.โ€

Willis also responded toย thoseย she saysย would accuse her ofย making an argument solely based on race.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it them playing the race card, when they constantly think I need someone from some other jurisdiction in some other state to tell me how to do a job Iโ€™ve been doing almost thirty years?โ€ Willisย asked to the applause of the congregation.

CNNย previously reported that, in a bid to get the sprawling racketeering case dismissed, attorneys for Trump co-defendantย Michael Roman claimedย inย aย court filing thatย Willis had a โ€œclandestineโ€ relationship withย Wade.

The filing doesnโ€™t include direct evidence of an improper relationship betweenย Willisย and Wade. The attorneys say in the filing that unnamed โ€œsources close to both the special prosecutor and the district attorney have confirmed they had an ongoing, personal relationship.โ€
