Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giannettino is advocating for more state aid following Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2024-25 budget proposal, which keeps funding for cities and municipalities unchanged.
The Aid and Incentives for Municipalities (AIM) program, a key source of unrestricted funding for local governments outside New York City, allocates $4,982,093 to Auburn in the proposed budget, according to The Citizen.
This amount has remained static since a cut in the 2011-12 budget under former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Giannettino, who took office on January 1, told The Citizen an AIM funding increase is essential for city operations.
Despite a significant rise in the state’s overall budget to $233 billion, state aid for local governments like Auburn has not been increased.
