New York cosmetologists will be required to learn textured hair styling

Starting May, cosmetologists in New York will be required to learn how to style all hair types, including textured hair.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill mandating that cosmetology training include skills for handling curly or wavy hair patterns, varying hair strand thickness, and different hair volumes.

The initiative addresses a gap in hair care services. The new requirement aims to educate people on managing natural hair and scalp health.

Advocates sees this change as beneficial for the community and cosmetologists, helping them to serve a wider range of clients. They expressed hope that other salons would embrace the new bill, emphasizing, “Hair is hair,” and a broader skill set is essential for inclusivity in the industry.
