Firefighters rescued a person who was trapped in a fire in a Brooklyn apartment on Monday night.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 22, FDNY units responded to a call regarding an apartment fire at 1518 West 4th St. Upon their arrival, they found that the man was trapped in heavy smoke and surrounded by heavy clutter. The fire extended to a third-floor apartment as well.
After being briefly hampered by a car parked in front of a hydrant, FDNY personnel consisting of 15 units and 75 firefighters used three hose lines, two on the interior and one from the exterior to knock down the main body of the fire.
The fire was placed under control at 8:01 p.m. The victim was rushed by paramedics to Maimonides Hospital.
Sources at the scene noted that the victim was attempting to take his own life with the fire. The FDNY Fire Marshals Office will determine the origin and cause of the fire.
