ALBANY — The Ichabod Crane girls’ basketball team was coming off a loss where offense proved hard to come by. Tuesday night, the Riders found success through the combination of sophomore guard Carolina Williams and senior forward Delaney More.
Williams, one of the area’s premier scorers, delivered 33 points and 10 rebounds and More matched her season high with 20 points as Ichabod Crane produced a 69-47 victory over Holy Names in Colonial Council action.
Friday night, the Riders (12-4 overall, 10-3 league) trailed Catholic Central 16-0 in the opening quarter in what ended up being a 52-44 loss.
“We had a lot of turnovers the other night and their defense was good,” Williams said of CCHS. “They pressured the ball and got into our heads. We couldn’t handle their pressure, but we battled back and hung in until the end. Holy Names is a talented team and they shoot a lot of 3s, so they can come back any minute. It was very important for us to get the lead and keep it.”
There were seven ties and four leads changes in the first quarter Tuesday. Ichabod Crane, paced by 10 points by Williams, led 22-17. The Riders managed to maintain their advantage and later extended it to 36-26 at intermission over the Panthers (14-6, 11-5) as Williams and More combined to score 29 points.
Williams made 11 of 21 shots overall, including 6-for-10 accuracy in the first half when the Riders went 17 of 28.
“We have talked about letting the game come to her and taking what the defense gives you,” Ichabod Crane coach Dave Ames said. “She did that tonight.”
“I have been working on my pull-up jumper and not going to the basket all of the time when people collapse on me,” Williams said.
“The one thing she does differently than most guards is keep her dribble,” Holy Names coach Steve Gigliello said of Williams. “She keeps it until she gets to…
