Jim Nantz, the No. 1 NFL broadcaster for CBS, gets credit for more than being a competent sportscaster.
He nailed the pronunciations of two Western New York communities.
Nantz had a lot to keep him busy during Sunday night’s soul-crushing game against the Kansas City Chiefs, which knocked the Buffalo Bills out of the playoffs.
But in the middle of the game, Nantz took a few moments to recognize high school girls flag football, which has now been recognized as a state championship sport.
In honor of the historic, upcoming season, he said, the Bills “invited varsity flag players from Lackawanna and Cheektowaga high schools to today’s game to represent all of the Western New York girls’ flag teams.” The high school athletes got to play a scrimmage on the field at Highmark Stadium during halftime.
Nantz hesitated briefly before uttering the words “Lackawanna” and “Cheektowaga,” but pronounced both words right.
Stefan Mychajliw, former Erie County comptroller and communications point man for presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, noticed. Now that Ramaswamy has given up his Republican bid for president, Mychajliw was back in Western New York redirecting his communication skills to the Bills. He clipped the video of Nantz and posted it to social media.
He praised Nantz’s pronunciation skills and said, “What’s the over/under on how many times he practiced it?”
Major props to @CBSSports‘s Jim Nantz. While the @BuffaloBills and @Chiefs game is intriguing, what’s most impressive to all of #BillsMafia is his proper pronunciation of Cheektowaga and Lackawanna. What’s the over/under on how many times he practiced it? pic.twitter.com/YolJHCMna6
