Woman who assaulted cop pleads guilty

KINGSTON – A 22-year-old New Windsor woman pled guilty in Ulster County Court  to assault and driving while intoxicated following a March 2023 traffic stop in New Paltz.  This is the second time that she has been charged with assaulting a police officer.

New Paltz Police performed a traffic stop in March of a vehicle operated by Lucia Costa.  The officers observed a strong odor of alcohol and requested Costa to exit the vehicle.  Rather than complying, Costa sped away, leading police on a high-speed chase reaching 85 mph in a 30 mph zone.

When officers were able to finally stop the vehicle, Costa became physically combative, including kicking and spitting at officers.  While trying to subdue the woman, she assaulted a female New Paltz officer, causing a tear in her labrum cartilage.

Costa was taken to the hospital after she intentionally banged her head against a bench at the police station, splitting her head open.  Her blood alcohol content was tested and at the time, was 0.16, twice the legal limit, and blood tests also showed active metabolites of cannabis.

Sentencing in connection with Monday’s plea is scheduled for April 24, 2024 in Ulster County Court.
