An NYPD officer was arrested for allegedly arranging to take sexually explicit photos of a 9-year old, according to federal prosecutors. Additionally, police in Colombia say the same officer arranged for sexually explicit material of a 1-year-old girl.
Before his arrest, 46-year-old Angad Beharry of Yonkers was assigned to NYPD’s counterterrorism unit. He was suspended without pay, according to the department, and charged by the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan with one count of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of possession of child pornography.
Attorney information for Beharry wasn’t immediately available. He was arraigned on Tuesday and held without bail, according to prosecutors.
“Beharry, as New York City police officer, is trusted in this community to protect us and stand up for what is right,” said Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for New York’s Southern District, in a prepared statement. “But he now stands accused of victimizing a child to satisfy his own alleged repulsive desires.”
“He betrayed his duty, chose to serve his vile desires, and, in turn, is accused of the same heinous crimes he once swore to combat,” wrote Acting Special Agent for Homeland Security Investigations Erin Keegan.
Gisainet Cristina Chirinos Viloria, a 23-year-old Venezuelan citizen currently living in Indiana, was also arrested for providing the images of the 9-year old and is being held without bail, according to prosecutors.
Viloria was allegedly acquainted with the 9-year old and sent the images via WhatsApp between August and September of 2022.
The U.S. attorney’s office said that in October 2022 the Colombian National Police arrested the mother of a 1-year old in Medellin, Colombia, who also communicated with Beharry through Facebook. Beharry allegedly asked for explicit material depicting sex acts between the mother and the infant, among other requests.
