A 23-year-old man died after a fire broke out at a NYCHA building in East Harlem on Friday morning, police said.
Emergency workers responded to a 911 call for a fire on the 5th floor of a 16-story building at 2370 2nd Ave. around 8:55 a.m., according to the NYPD and FDNY. The building is part of NYCHAโs 27-acre Robert F. Wagner Houses complex near the East River.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control by 9:40 a.m., the FDNY said.
Police said the man was found unconscious and unresponsive inside the building. He was transported to Harlem Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The manโs identity has not been released, pending notification of his family.
Two others, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, suffered smoke inhalation but refused medical attention, according to officials.
The FDNY said fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.
