Joe Flacco endorses Bills’ Damar Hamlin for CPOY: I’m just coming back from being old

Joe Flacco made the most of his opportunity this season when the Cleveland Browns came calling, but he also realizes his return to the field is just a case of getting a phone call and getting off of the couch.

The veteran quarterback is among five candidates for Comeback Player of the Year at NFL Honors, but feels that he–and the majority of the field for that matter–are not viable candidates compared to Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. In an appearance on the Zach Gelb Show, Flacco said that Hamlin was the only finalist who should win the award.

“I don’t necessarily know what I’m coming back from,” Flacco told Gelb. “I would say most of the guys on that list, I’m not sure what we’re coming back from, so that’s probably my initial reaction. But I think any time that you’re getting recognized in this league for playing well, I guess, it can be flattering. So, it’s a cool group to be a part of, that’s for sure. But yeah, that’s my initial thought.”

Flacco would go on to say that besides Hamlin, none of the candidates on the list are necessarily qualified to win the award. The veteran has a point.

In addition to Flacco and Hamlin, the other finalists for the award are Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield and Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford. Stafford suffered a variety of injuries in 2022, Tagovailoa played a full season after dealing with concussions last year while Mayfield played some of his best football in years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As for Flacco, the veteran says he’s just coming back from being old.

“I’m not necessarily (qualified to be a candidate)… I’m just coming back from being old and not being on a team for a couple months so who knows? I think we could go through most (of the finalists), like I said most of the guys on that list–besides Damar–I don’t know if we’re necessarily coming back from anything.”
