Maria Sexton, Vestal Town Supervisor and a retired New York City Police officer, is at the center of controversy following her intervention with a wrong-way driver. Praised by some as a hero, Sexton is also facing accusations of impersonating a police officer, a claim she firmly denies.
On her way to work, Sexton noticed a vehicle driving the wrong way on Route 434. Utilizing her town-issued, unmarked police cruiser, she blocked traffic to prevent a potential accident. She then used the cruiser’s police lights to stop the errant driver, checking if they were in need of medical assistance or under the influence.
However, Town Board member Stephen Donnelly has raised concerns about Sexton’s actions, suggesting she overstepped her authority and potentially impersonated a police officer. Donnelly has referred the matter to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney, citing possible legal implications for the town. Sexton, meanwhile, stands by her actions, believing she averted a possible tragedy.
