If you can’t beat them, sign away one of their current or former coaches.
That may be the motto the Miami Dolphins are using in their search for their next defensive coordinator. On Monday night, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Dolphins would be interviewing former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier for their defensive coordinator role. The Dolphins recently had a mutual parting of ways with Vic Fangio, the team’s defensive coordinator in 2023.
Frazier had been with the Bills since 2017 serving as their defensive coordinator (2017-2022) and assistant head coach (2020-2022), but decided to take a year off from coaching in 2023. The move came as a surprise at the time with Sean McDermott taking over the play-calling duties on the defensive side of the ball, but Frazier opened up about his decision on an appearance on the Zach Gelb Show.
“It just got to a point for me Zach where I just felt like this was something I needed to do at this stage of my career,” Frazier told Gelb via Buffalo Rumblings. “You know, that 2022 season was a challenging year with some of the things that happened with our team — having to go to cities and stay in cities and not get back and forth. And you know, we were getting ready to go back to the combine and I was at home and just thinking about it, man, about did I want to go back for another year. And I just made the decision I was going to take the year off and just see what happens from there.”
Frazier wasn’t Miami’s first interview with a current or former Bills coach. Miami recently requested an interview with Bobby Babich. Currently the Bills’ linebackers coach, Babich is in the running for the Bills’ defensive coordinator job and has received interview requests from the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers as well.
