A free 16-week workshop for people who are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes will begin Feb. 27 in Lockport.
Sponsored by the Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division in collaboration with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, it will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays in the community room at Lockport Memorial Hospital, 6001 Shimer Drive.
The workshop sessions will help participants learn how to make lasting changes to their health, such as losing a modest amount of weight, becoming more physically active and managing stress. Participants will follow up with bimonthly meetings for three months and then meet once a month for five more months.
To be eligible, participants must be at least 18 years old, have a body mass index of 25 or higher and must not have been previously diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Those who are pregnant are ineligible.
Participants must also meet at least one of the following requirements: A blood test result in the prediabetes range within the past year, a previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes during pregnancy, or a high-risk score of 5 or higher on the Prediabetes Risk Test. To register, call 716-278-8596.
