Gov. Hochul says safer open-gangway trains now running between Brooklyn and Manhattan: Report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In an effort to ease overcrowding and provide more safety benefits, the MTA introduced two open-gangway trains into service Thursday, the Daily News reported.

Running through Manhattan and Brooklyn along the C line, the cars specialty feature is their articulated sections that allow riders to travel easily from one car into the next to be able and see up and down the entire length of the train.

The new “R211T” features security cameras throughout the train, wider doors, digital screens in every car, and additional accessibility faeatures, according to a release by the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul.

“You can actually move seamlessly from one car to the other,” Hochul said at a press event at the MTA’s 207th St. Yard in upper Manhattan, the report said.

“You’re not trapped. You want to have a different experience, you get up and move around,” Hochul said. “You see someone who looks more interesting to talk to than someone else, just get up and move around.”

Riders can expect more of the open-gangway trains in the future, but MTA officials say it is unknown when, the report said.
