Hochul launches ‘Buy Safe, Charge Safe’ campaign for lithium-ion battery safety

Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled the “Buy Safe, Charge Safe” campaign to educate New Yorkers about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries and promote safe usage practices. This initiative complements Hochul’s proposal to ban the sale of unsafe lithium-ion batteries in micro-mobility devices. The campaign aims to mitigate the risk of fires caused by these batteries, which have led to over 250 fires, more than 130 injuries, and at least 18 fatalities in New York City alone in 2023, with additional incidents across the state.

This statewide effort involves multiple agencies and will provide New Yorkers with guidance on purchasing, using, charging, and maintaining lithium-ion battery-powered devices. Starting February 1, 2024, the campaign will feature display, search, and social media ads, alongside an educational video and a one-stop website, ny.gov/chargesafe, offering comprehensive safety information.

The Department of State, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, and other involved agencies have also developed a Lithium-Ion Battery Consumer Safety Guide. The guide offers essential tips for safely handling these batteries, from purchase to disposal, aiming to prevent fires and protect New Yorkers’ lives and properties.
