Groundhog Day 2024 prediction: Early spring or more winter? Will Staten Island Chuck see his shadow?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island Chuck is nearly ready for his close-up. The prognosticating groundhog is geared up to make his weather prediction live from the Staten Island Zoo on Friday.

Whether he calls for six more weeks of winter or an early spring remains to be seen.

Staten Islanders can see Chuck — otherwise known as Charles G. Hogg — make his call in-person during the Zoo’s Groundhog Day ceremony.

For the first time since 2020, Staten Islanders will be able to watch Staten Island Chuck’s prediction in person. The Zoo suspended the in-person event for the past few years due to the emergence of the coronavirus and its ensuing subvariants.

Joining Zoo Executive Director Ken Mitchell at the ceremony will be Emmy-nominated meteorologist and CBS News weather forecaster Tony Sadiku. Several Staten Island elected officials, community leaders, teachers and students are also expected to attend.

HOW TO WATCH

This year’s Groundhog Day celebration at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton will be live-streamed.

Gates open to the public at 6:30 a.m. The ceremony begins at 7 a.m. and can be seen live on the Staten Island Zoo’s Facebook page. Chuck will emerge from his “burrow” promptly at 7:30 a.m. and make his prediction.

The Staten Island Advance/SILive.com will also be on hand to cover the prediction. You’ll be able to catch the ceremony live from our Facebook page.

Those interested in seeing Punxsutawney Phil make his prediction can view it here. The livestream will begin at approximately 6 a.m. But let’s be honest: If you have any semblance of hometown pride, Staten Island Chuck is the one to watch.

HISTORY AND ACCURACY

While Chuck’s main competitor, Punxsutawney Phil, has been making predictions for decades longer, Chuck boasts a more incredible accuracy rate. In fact, according to William Frew, Zoo board of trustees president, Chuck’s accuracy rate lands at an impressive 80%. He added Chuck has issued 14 consecutive correct predictions.
