The president and CEO of Walmart, John Furner, recently announced that Walmart intends to build or convert more than 150 stores within the next five years.
In touting the retail giant’s investment in America, Furner shared that Walmart currently employs around 1,600,000 people in the U.S., and through Walmart’s expansion will develop tens of thousands of jobs.
Beyond developing new stores, the business aims to continue remodeling existing Walmarts. Within the next 12 months, Walmart looks to remodel 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico.
“These efforts represent millions of dollars in capital investment of labor, supplies and tax revenue, which benefit their respective communities,” Furner said in his announcement. “And they’ll help us reach and serve even more customers.”
Among the first new stores being built by Walmart will be Neighborhood Markets in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. and Atlanta, Ga.; both slated to open later in the spring.
Walmart is also finalizing construction plans on 12 new projects with start dates for this year. Additionally, Walmart plans to convert one of its smaller locations into a Walmart Supercenter.
The anticipated stores and remodeled Walmarts look to reflect the business’ Store of the Future concept, which consists of enhanced layouts, an expanded selection of products, and new technology aimed at aiding employees in supporting customers and their shopping experience. Customers have taken to the concept in locations already implementing it, according to Furner.
The new facilities look to keep sustainability in mind through its design. Walmart hopes to do this by implementing more energy-efficient equipment and lighting, lower impact refrigerants and more. Furner also noted that Walmart is seeking to develop a network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations across the nation.
