A mini-golf course, a Lego building competition for adults, competitions for the best chalk art and quilt square, and Erie Countyโs own version of โThe Great British Baking Showโ will be among the new competitive events featured at the Erie County Fair this year.
Each August, in addition to offering decadent treats and thrilling rides, the Hamburg Fairgrounds pops with creative arts and spirited competitions.
The fairgrounds on McKinley Parkway hosts events to determine who makes the best jam, grows the biggest stalk of corn or raises the finest dairy cow. Competitors of various ages can choose from among more than 8,000 classes to enter to win ribbons and cash prizes, according to Holly Smyczynski, sponsorship and special events coordinator for the fair.
Several new competitions are being added to the 2024 version of the fair, which will still include standbys such as the home brew competition.
Smyczynski figures the adult Lego building will be among the most challenging of the debut events. Participants will be given two hours at the fair to create an original Lego design.
“Itโs an on-the-spot competition,” Smyczynski said. “In the past, weโve only had a juniors competition, where they would actually put a Lego display together and bring it in to be judged. Now, they can come in, and we would provide them with the set of Legos, and they have an hour to create something that is fair-related.โ
From livestock and horse shows to baking and art displays, competitive exhibits are the center of events at the fairgrounds, she said. This year’s fair will see the return of the culinary arts division that will include a baking competition with classes for cookies, cakes, yeast bread, quick breads, pies, cobbler and even candy, with a separate division for junior competitors, as well.
