Ontario County Dems rally support for refugee families through Called to Care Canandaigua

In a local show of support, the Ontario County Democratic Committee (OCDC) has raised $1,660 to support Called to Care, Canandaigua, a local organization dedicated to helping refugee families fleeing war and violence. The funds, raised in December, facilitated the purchase of essential bedding for new families starting their lives in America, including four twin and one full mattress and box spring sets. This contribution comes at a crucial time as Called to Care prepares to welcome two new families by the end of January, adding to the eight families they’ve already helped over the past 18 months.

The OCDC’s members have gone beyond financial contributions, donating furnishings and offering direct assistance to the families. John Hurley, Chair of the OCDC, emphasized the alignment of this initiative with democratic values, highlighting the importance of offering a support network to those seeking refuge in the United States. This effort not only aids the families in need but also strengthens the community’s fabric through increased cultural diversity.

Meg Huff, Vice President of Called to Care, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and generosity from the community. The organization, run entirely by volunteers, focuses on providing immediate assistance and long-term resettlement support, including housing, transportation, and employment authorization applications, to refugee families.
