Starting August 1, New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation is modernizing its approach by allowing hunters, anglers, and trappers to print their licenses at home. This initiative marks a shift from specialized synthetic paper to regular paper for all state-issued sporting licenses and carcass tags, aimed at streamlining the process for outdoor enthusiasts. The move is set to reduce waiting times, previously up to 14 business days for mailed licenses, and address supply chain challenges in acquiring synthetic paper.
DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos highlighted the update as a step forward in using emerging technologies to enhance the sporting community’s experience. The change is expected to not only make the licensing process more efficient but also contribute to environmental conservation efforts by reducing the state’s carbon footprint. With the advent of this system, New York joins other states in adopting more accessible and cost-effective solutions for license issuance.
The transition to plain paper licenses will coincide with the start of sales from August 1, applying to the 2024-2025 license year, excluding the spring 2024 turkey season. Lifetime license holders will receive their new documents on plain paper by September 1. Additionally, the DEC encourages the use of the HuntFishNY mobile app for digital proof of licensure, although physical backtags and carcass tags remain a requirement. Further details on this new system will be provided by the DEC as the implementation date approaches.
