Zach Wilson’s time with the Jets is almost certainly coming to its end.
So what can New York expect in exchange for its former No. 2 overall pick? Rich Cimini of ESPN spoke to three personnel executives, a scout and two assistant coaches from other teams to get a sense of the quarterback’s value. One assistant coach took a jab at the 24-year-old and implied the Jets should take what they can get for him.
“I’d give up a two-week stay at a Best Western,” the coach said, via Cimini, “I’m not a fan.”
The scout told Cimini that the Jets could get a seventh-round pick “if they’re lucky.” A personnel executive said the Jets “will never get the value they want.” The other assistant coach Cimini spoke to said a team could take a chance on Wilson for his arm.
“The only trade value for him is his arm talent, meaning he can make all the throws,” that assistant coach said. “But the biggest thing, he has to become more mature and be consistent in everything, especially his decision making. There were flashes this year, but obviously not enough.”
Aaron Rodgers is expected to be ready to play in 2024 and general manager Joe Douglas said last month that there’s a “high probability” the Jets will pursue a veteran to back up the four-time MVP.
“I love Zach and I want what’s best for Zach and if he wants to be here and if that’s what’s best for him, then obviously, we’d love to have that relationship for another year,” Rodgers said last month. “But I want what’s best for him and where he wants to be. Sometimes a change of scenery, as I know, can be a breath of fresh air. It’s good to be able to have a new start sometimes, but I love Zach and we’ll still be connected and we’ll see what happens.”
