A Staten Island man faces up to 16 years in state prison after running down a pair of pedestrians while admittedly under the influence of alcohol, The Daily Star is reporting.
Rudolph E. Pacheco, 71, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court on Monday to first-degree vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident causing death, and aggravated driving while intoxicated, the report said.
Public records indicate that Pacheco is from South Beach.
According to authorities, on Aug. 2, Pacheco was driving on New Kingston Road in Middletown, New York, with a blood alcohol content greater than .18% when he drove up on the side of the road and struck two pedestrians. He left the scene of the accident but was stopped by police several miles away, the report said.
One of the pedestrians, 67-year-old Joyce Guidice, was declared dead at the scene, while 68-year-old John Guidice was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
โNumerous lifesaving measures were performed on scene,โ the New York State Police said in a statement at the time of the incident. โSadly, the efforts were unsuccessful and Joyce Guidice was pronounced deceased.โ
Pacheco stated that he had been taking shots of whiskey and drinking beer at a bar for six to seven hours before leaving the establishment. He also said that he was aware that the pedestrian had been killed, but left her body on the side of the road before driving away, the report said.
