Democratic first-term state assemblywoman faces party primary challenge

KINGSTON – Gabi Madden, a Democrat and former chief of staff for former Assemblyman Kevin Cahill and former deputy chief of staff for current State Senator James Skoufis, both Democrats, announced her bid Thursday to seek the seat in the New York State 103rd Assembly District.

“Who’ll understand the necessity in rooting to sustain growth and stabilizing to sustain change I believe that someone is me,” said Madden, during her remarks.

“And while change and growth are imminent, for both or worse, is dependent on the route we take to get there. It’s all in the journey they say. It’s the truth. The path we take to achieve change counts. Just how we approach a problem dictates the solution we eventually reach.”

The district encompasses the northern Dutchess County towns of Rhinebeck and Red Hook, and the City of Kingston and the towns of Esopus, Gardiner, Marbletown, Olive, New Paltz, Rosendale, Saugerties, Ulster and Woodstock.

“What you look for in a public servant is someone who serve the needs of a community,” said Kingston Mayor Steve Noble, a fellow Democrat. “And really when it gets to being an elected public servant, you’re going to serve everyone, whether they are a Democrat, a Republican, non-enrolled, it doesn’t matter because we want make sure our communities are vibrant.”

Skoufis, Madden’s one-time boss, said his former deputy chief of staff had as strong connection with his constituents and worked to ensure their needs were always met.

“She would solve a problem,” said Skoufis,” but that wasn’t the end of it. She’d check in, how are you doing? Anything else I can help with? That’s the kind of assemblywoman you need in the state legislature.”

Sarahana Shrestha, a Democrat from Esopus, currently represents the The 103rd Assembly District after she defeated Cahill in 2022. Now the incumbent will have Madden as a primary challenger on June 25.
