Senior forward Gabriel Seger recorded his 100th career point as the No. 13-ranked Cornell men’s hockey team defeated RPI, 4-1, at the Houston Field House in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night.
Seger was one of four goal scorers for Cornell (14-4-4, 9-4-2 ECAC) as the Big Red increased its unbeaten streak to 11 games (8-0-3) with the victory.
Joining Seger in netting goals for the victorious Big Red were freshmen forwards Jonathan Castagna and Luke Devlin and junior forward Ondrej Psenicka. Fellow junior forward Sullivan Mack was the lone Cornell player to notch a multi-point night, assisting on a pair of tallies.
Junior goaltender Ian Shane made 19 saves in the victory for the Big Red, improving his figures during its unbeaten streak to a 1.50 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage.
Austin Heidemann scored the lone goal for RPI (8-17-2, 4-9-1 ECAC), who also had a 28-save performance from goaltender Jack Watson.
Castagna scored the game’s first goal off a feed from Mack just shy of four minutes into the contest. Mack, who drew a tripping penalty on the play, set up the marker with a pass while on one knee in front of the goal crease.
Devlin extended the Big Red’s lead — and his goal streak to three — on a partial wrap-around with under 90 seconds left in the opening frame. Fellow freshman forward Tyler Catalano also increased his point streak to three games after logging the lone assist.
RPI cut the Big Red’s lead in half in the second period as Heidemann lasered a shot past Shane from the mid-slot through traffic in the waning seconds of the Engineers’ power play.
Seger reached the century mark for career points when he potted the first of two Big Red goals in under two minutes, tucking the puck past Watson on a breakaway chance. During the play, Seger was hooked by an RPI player, leading Cornell to its second power play of the night after scoring.
