STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— Local non-profit organizations and New York City are partnering to provide free tax preparation assistance to eligible Staten Islanders for the 2024 tax season.
Through April 26, Project Hospitality, El Centro del Inmigrante and the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will be providing free, professional, in-person and “contactless” federal and state tax return preparation assistance to qualifying Staten Islanders.
Volunteer income tax assistance preparers that are IRS-certified will complete tax returns free of charge for those eligible, essentially saving them hundreds in tax preparation fees.
Tax filers who earned $85,000 or less with dependents; $59,000 or less without dependents; and/or collected unemployment in 2023 are eligible to utilize the program.
The program offers three appointment options:
- Drop-off (preferred method): Schedule an appointment to drop off tax documents at one of three community help centers. Participants will then receive a call from a volunteer preparer to review the tax return and submit/e-file.
- In-Person: Participants can schedule an appointment to visit a help center to sit with a volunteer as they prepare and submit the tax returns.
- Virtual: Participants can virtually meet with a preparer over a video conference. Appointments must be scheduled in advance for one- to two-hour time slots. Access to a computer, smartphone or tablet with Wi-Fi is required for this option.
“For over 20 years, NYC Free Tax Prep has helped New Yorkers file more than 1.45 million tax returns, saving them more than $216 million in potential filing fees,” said Vilda Vera Mayuga, Department of Consumer and Worker Protection commissioner. “This year, we’re helping more filers keep more of their hard-earned money with the enhanced NYC earned income tax credit and our expanded NYC free tax prep services for self-employed New Yorkers.”
