In a bizarre incident on January 26 around 7:30 p.m., an unknown individual was caught on a doorbell camera abandoning two cats at a home in Canandaigua. The suspect, seen carrying a cardboard box to the front porch of the residence, quickly left the scene after placing the box, which contained two cats along with food and water, on the porch. The homeowner discovered the felines shortly after. Authorities from the Canandaigua Police Department and the Ontario County Humane Society have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Thanks to a collaborative effort between the Ontario County Humane Society and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, evidence from the scene, including a fingerprint lifted from a water dish, led to the identification of 23-year-old Cole Lee Carpenter as the suspect. Carpenter, who was in the midst of moving and unable to rehome his cats, Ethel and Lucy, chose a random residence for their abandonment, without knowing the homeowners.
Carpenter, who cooperated with the investigation, was charged with misdemeanor animal abandonment. He was issued an appearance ticket for the City of Canandaigua Court and released. Meanwhile, Ethel and Lucy are being cared for at a shelter, awaiting adoption. The authorities remind the public of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the options available for those unable to care for their animals.
