STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — One civilian and three firefighters were injured Monday afternoon while battling a blaze that left members of the FDNY bailing out of smoke-filled windows and a Great Kills home decimated.
Twenty-five FDNY units and 106 firefighters responded to the “all-hands” fire that was reported around 2:25 p.m. at a private residence, located at 474 Elverton Ave. between Gurley Avenue and Arthur Kill Road.
The fire originated in the basement and reached the upper floors of the home before it was able to be placed under control around 3:50 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson said.
Several people could be seen being treated by FDNY EMS. The civilian and two of the firefighters suffered minor injuries, while one firefighter suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries. All were transported to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.
