Mayor Eric Adams wasn’t about to play running back and see if the Staten Island Hurricanes could tackle him during a ceremony Monday honoring the organization’s 13U squad, which copped a national crown last December.
Afterall, he knows a good football team when he sees one.
The Hurricanes were recognized by Adams at City Hall for winning the United Youth Football League’s (UYFL) 13U All-America division in Plant City, Fla., with a 21-13 victory over the Dark Chiefs of New Jersey. It was the organization’s 15th national crown.
Mayor Adams praised the boys and their coaches — head coach Javon Parnell and his assistants Gis Rondeau, Sam Barnes, Dennis Ward, Divine Young, Chuck Newsome, Pablo Sinclair, Mark Rutledge and Melinda Haskell — and told them of the importance of organized sports and how it can build character and everlasting friendships.
Mayor Adams also commended the young athletes and their coaching staff for their dedication, hard work, and sportsmanship that brought glory to Staten Island.
The day was a celebration of the Hurricanes’ remarkable journey and an acknowledgment of their contribution to the local community.
Through the years, the Hurricanes organization have been a youth football feeder organization for many of the borough’s high school football teams.
The program, affectionately known as The SHO, was established in 2002 and has consistently demonstrated excellence and dedication to youth football development, and their latest triumph further solidifies its status as a powerhouse in the sport.
Mayor Adams presented the players with citation certificates, while Barnes, the organization’s founder, gave the Mayor a commemorative “Sho” jersey with the organization’s logo and the year it was established as a token of gratitude. The No. 15 on the jersey represents the amount of national titles the organization has won.
